Profile types, Intelligent and Forced Recode:

 

There are two types of output profiles: "Intelligent" and "Forced Recode" and refer to how the video will be processed.  The audio portion of a profile is treated separately, and isn't affected by whether the profile is Intelligent or Forced Recode.  The reason for the two types of output profiles, is that VideoReDo Pro is capable of cutting and joining MPEG2- and H.264/AVC- based files without transcoding the entire file.  In smart-edit mode, VideoReDo Pro will attempt to only recode a small portion of the video at cut points, passing through the balance of the video without modifications.  In Forced Recode mode, the entire video is recoded regardless of whether smart edit could be used or not.

The profile type is set via the "Output Mode" option in the general section of the settings page.

 

For Intelligent profiles, the following criteria are used to determine if the smart-edit mode can be used.  If not, your Intelligent profile will automatically revert to Force Recode and the output will be completely transcoded.  

 

The quick way to tell if a given profile will result in transcoding of your source is to click on File>Save, select an output profile from the "Save as type", and look for the "Major Recode Required".  If you don't see that text, then smart editing will be used.

If the output video codec is different from the source files' video codec.
 

Max Resolution

If either the horizontal or vertical dimension of the source video(s) exceed their respective values of "Max Resolution".  The "Max Resolution" is set on the Video settings tab.
 

Max Bitrate

 

If the bit rate of the source video is greater than the maximum allowed bit rate on the Video settings tab, a recode will be triggered.

 

Aspect Correction

If the output aspect ratio is different from the source aspect ratio AND the Aspect Correction setting is NOT set to None.  In the case of MPEG2 files only, the aspect ratio can be changed without recoding. To change the aspect ratio of an H.264 file without doing any cropping or clipping set the encoding mode to "Forced Recode".
 

Frame rate

If the frame rate of the source video does not match the frame rate setting in the output profile.
 

Rotate

If the Rotate parameter is set to none, a recode will not be triggered.
If the Rotate is set to "auto" and the source video's orientation (rotation) is 0 degrees, a recode will not be triggered.  
If the source file's orientation is not 0, and the output file is MP4/MOV, a recode will not be triggered, and the source file's orientation will be copied to the metadata of the output file.
If the source files' orientation is not 0, and the output file is NOT MP4/MOV, a recode will be triggered.
 

Flip

If the Flip setting is set to anything other than "None", a recode will be triggered.
 

Cropping and borders

If any cropping or borders are applied, a recode will be triggered.  This includes automatic conversion to letter box and or pillar box.
 

Target size

If the target file size mode on the Advanced > Intelligent Recode Option specifies a smaller file size than our estimate of the the saved output file's size, a recode will be triggered.
 

Joiner dimension mismatch

When joining files, if any of the files have an encoding dimension that's different from the others a recode will be triggered.
 

 

Audio processing:

 

In general, the audio will be copied (passed through) to the output without recoding, the following situations will trigger a auto audio recoding.

 

Volume adjustment from the GUI using Tools>Adjust audio.
 

Volume adjustment of any kind via the output profile such as add gain loss, normalization, etc.
 

Sampling rate change, such as 44,100 to 48,000 samples / second.
 

Joining files that have different audio configurations, such as codecs, sampling rates, number of channels, bits per sample, etc.
 

Changing the codec, or number of output channels.
 

The output file type and/or video codec doesn't support the source audio codec:

MPEG2 program streams

PCM audio at 48K or 96K, AC3, MPEG1 Layer 2, and DTS (DTS support is experimental)
 

MPEG2 transport streams

AC3, EAC3, MPEG1 Layer 2.

 

DVD authoring

 

PCM 16 bit, MPEG1 Layer 2, and AC3.  Only 48K sampling rate is allowed for DVDs.

PCM channel counts greater than 2 (stereo) will be recoded to stereo.

 

H264 transport streams

 

MPEG1 Layer 2, AC3,EAC3, AAC.

 

MP4

MPEG1 Layer 2, AAC, and AC3. Other formats recoded to AAC by default.

 

MOV

 

MPEG1 Layer 2, AAC, AC3 and PCM. MOV created by selecting MP4 output and changing the MP4 mux type to MOV

 

WMV

 

All WMV output will force an audio recode to Windows audio

All AAC-HE

 

All AAC-HE will be recoded to AAC-LC if the audio bit rate is greater than 96 Kbps.

 

MKV with MPEG2 video

 

PCM, MPEG 1 Layer 2, AC3, EAC3 and DTS (DTS is experimental)

 

MKV with H.264 video

 

PCM, MPEG 1 Layer 2, AAC, AC3, EAC3 and DTS (DTS is experimental)

 

WTV with MPEG2 video

 

MPEG1 Layer 2, AC3, and EAC3.

 

WTV with H.264 video

 

MPEG1 Layer 2, AC3, EAC3, and AAC-LC.

 

Tivo

 

MPEG1 Layer 2, AC3, AAC.  If audio is formatted as LATM and number of channels isn't 2, it will be recoded to MPEG1 Layer 2.
