Profile name

Enter or change the profile name.
 

Encoding type

Select one of:

•Match Source - Use the video codec to match the source file.  If the source file isn't MPEG, H.264, or HEVC, the profile will default to H.264.

•MPEG-2 - Save as MPEG2.

•H.264/AVC - Save the video as H.264

•HEVC - Save the video as HEVC

•WMV - Recode the video to WMV.

•VC-1 - Recode the video to VC1.

•No Video - Can only be used with elementary stream output and outputs only audio streams.

Output mode

Determines the output mode, please see the discussion of Intelligent vs Forced Recode.  Select either:

•Intelligent Recode

•Force Recode

File type

Select the desired output container.  Not all containers are compatible with specific output video codecs.

Note: WMV, VC-1 codecs automatically imply a Windows .ASF file type.

File extension

Override the default file extension for this output profile.

Encoder

If your system supports Intel QuickSync (see Tools>Options>Intel QuickSync GPU) GPU encoding, you can choose which encoder to use when transcoding. When doing SmartEditing, a software encoder is always used due to limitations of QuickSync encoder to match the exact video characteristics of the source content.

•Default - Use QuickSync or software encoding based on the Tools>Options>Stream parameters setting of "Use QuickSync encoder".

•Intel QuickSync - Always use the Intel QuickSync encoder.

•Software - Always use the software encoder.

Default Directory

If not blank, the output save dialog will default to this folder when prompting for an output file name.  If blank, the save routine will use last directory previously used for saving.

Resolution

Max resolution

For Intelligent Recode profiles: If either video dimension exceeds it's corresponding "Max resolution" a transcode to the Max resolution will be triggered.  For example, if the max resolution is 1440x1080 and you attempt to save a 1920x1080 video, a recode to 1440x1080 will occur.

For Force Recode profiles: The video will always be encoded to the specified resolution.

Encoding mode

Select one of:

•Single pass encoding - May be VBR (variable bit rate) or CBR (constant bit rate).  (See Avg and Max bit rate entries).
 

•Dual pass encoding - Dual pass encoding encodes the video in two passes.  The first pass analyzes the video to determine which frames require the most encoding bits allocating those bits to the more complex / difficult to encode frames.  The second pass does the actual encode.  QuickSync and NVEnc encoding do not support dual pass encoding.
 

•CRF Encoding - Stands for "Constant Rate Factor" and is a form of single-pass VBR encoding.  In CRF mode, rather than specify the average bit rate, you specify a rate factor value, with higher CRF values resulting in lower encoding bit rates and reduced output quality. In CRF mode the complexity of each frame is analyzed to see how complex it's content is, and the number of bits allocated to the frame is based on that complexity.  Not all encoders support CRF mode.  A good starting value  for a CRF value is in the range of 20 to 25. When CRF encoding is select the "Avg Bitrat" and "Max bitrate:,  Each encoder uses somewhat different internal algorithms for CRF and while TVSuite  attempts to equalize the settings a CRF value for one encoder will not yield the same result if you select a different encoder.

Encoder

If your system supports Intel QuickSync or NVenc GPU encoding  (see Tools>Options>GPU encoders), you can choose which encoder to use when transcoding. When doing SmartEditing, a software encoder is always regardless of this setting, due to the limitations of GPU encoders to match the exact video characteristics of the source content.
 

•Default - Use QuickSync, NVEnc  or a software encoding based on the Tools>Options>Stream parameters setting of "Default encoder".
 

•Intel QuickSync - Always use the Intel QuickSync encoder if possible.  QuickSync support MPEG2 4:2:0, H264 4:2:0 and perhaps HEVC 4:2:0 depending on how modern your Intel CPU is and whether or not your video driver is up to date.
 

•Software encoder- Always use the software encoder For H.264 and HEVC is you are running on a 64-bit system the 64-bit version of the software encoder will be used.
 

•Classic encoder - This will force the H.264 and HEVC software encoders into 32-bit mode. This option is provided for compatibility with existing profiles and is not a recommended setting.
 

•NVEnc encoder - Use the Nvidia NVEnc encoder for H.264 and HEVC files.  Not all output file configurations are supported by the NVEnc coder and these configurations may can vary between the different graphic cards.  Use the Tools>Options>GPU Encoders to determine if NVEnc is available and which output profile characteristics are supported.

Encoder bits
 

The bit depth of the encoded file:

•No change - output the encoded file with the same bit depth as the source.

•8 bit - The output of the encoded file will be 8 bits.

•10 bit - The output of the encoded file will be 10 bits.

Notes:

If the output bit depth differs from the source video and "Encoding mode" is intelligent a transcode will be triggered.

Not all encoders and codecs support 10-bit bit depth.  

Avg bit rate

Header bit rate

For Force Recode profiles: Specify the average encoding bit rate.

For Intelligent Recode profiles: Use the "Header bitrate" to change bit rate stored in the sequence header.  This option is only available for MPEG2 output and doesn't trigger a recode or change the video quality.  If an Intelligent profile triggers a recode, then the bit rates are determined according to the settings on the Intelligent Recode options available via the Advanced Options button.

The button will display the bit rate calculator which can be used to calculate an average and maximum bit rate based on target file size.  For example: If you want a 1 hour video to fit into 1.5 GB (1500 MB), the bit rate calculator will set the average bit rate to achieve that target file size.  The calculator computes and sets the average and maximum bit rates for the values given, The values input into the calculator are not stored as part of the output profile

Max bit rate

For Force Recode profiles: Specify the maximum bit rate.  This value MUST be greater than or equal to the average bit rate.  When transcoding, the bit rate will vary up to this value.  If the "encoding mode" is "Single Pass" and the Max Rate equals the average bit rate then the video is encoded as a CBR video. When the max bit rate is greater than the average bit rate, the video is encoded as in VBR mode.

For Intelligent Recode profiles: If the source file's bit rate is greater than the max bitrate, a transcode will be triggered. The Max bit rate is undefined and not used for files that are being QuickStreamed Fixed.

Rate factor

If you select CRF encoding in the "Encoder" drop down, the "Average" and "Max" bit rate options will be replaced by the CRF slider control.

Use the mouse or the left/right arrow keys to alter the CRF setting.  Remember, increasing the CRF value will lower the output bit rate creating a smaller output file with reduced quality.

Aspect ratio

Select the output aspect ratio:

•No Change - match the source file's aspect ratio.

•1:1 - Set aspect ratio to 1:1

•4:3 - Set the aspect ratio to 4:3

•16:9 - Set the aspect ratio to 16:9

•2.21:1 - Set the aspect ratio to 2.21:1

•Match resolution - Sets the aspect ratio according to the resolution of the output video.

Intelligent mode: If the source and output file are encoded with MPEG2 and other profile settings aren't forcing a recode, you can change the aspect ratio without forcing a transcode.  Otherwise, a change in aspect ratio will force a recode.
 
Forced recode: The select aspect ratio becomes the output aspect ratio.

Aspect correction

If the output aspect ratio doesn't match the source file's aspect ratio, this setting determines how to manage the change:

•None: Don't change the video, simply transcode it substituting the new aspect ratio.  This selection can produce a distorted video, for example converting a 16 x 9 to 4x3 without correction.  By the same token, if a video is encoded with an incorrect aspect ratio, Using the "none" option may let you correct the encoded error.

•Crop to fit: Remove part of the source to produce a full frame video.  For 16x9 to 4x3 conversion, this is also referred to as "center cut", whereby the left and right sides of video are cropped to create a full-frame 4x3 conversion. For 4x3 to 16x9 conversion, the crop option will remove content from the top and bottom of the source video to create a wide screen view without letterboxes.  In general, "crop" mode is not suggested for converting 4x3 to wide screen aspect ratios.

•Letterbox / Pillar box: In Box mode, VideoReDo TVSuite will create wide screen to 4x3 by automatically creating top and bottom letter box bars.  When converting 4 x 3 to wide screen, left and right pillar bars are generated leaving the original 4x3 content in the center of the screen.

•Custom crop and resize: Use the crop and and border entries to specify the aspect ratio correction.

Framerate

Intelligent mode: If the output frame rate differs from the source frame rate, smart editing will be disabled and a transcoding will be performed.

Select from one of the available output frame rates.  The Automatic option is used to automatically set the frame rate based the source frame rate, input and output dimensions:

•If the source is 25 or 29.97 fps and the output is 720p, the output frame rate will be 50 or 59.94, respectively.

•If the source is 50 or 59.94 fps and the output is SD or 1080i, the output frame rate will be 25 or 29.97, respectively.

Rotate

Select from one of:

•None - Don't rotate the video

•Auto - Auto rotate the video if the file's metadata indicates that it's been recorded as rotated.

•90º Clockwise - Rotate the video by 90 degrees in the clockwise direction.

•90º Counter Clockwise - Rotate the video by 90 degrees in the counter-clockwise direction.

•180º - Rotate the video by 180 degrees.

Interlacing

This setting controls interlacing and de-interlacing during transcoding.

•No change: Leave the video interlacing unchanged.

•Deinterlace Auto: If output frame rate is double the source frame rate, VideoReDo TVSuite will use a BOB deinterlacing.  Otherwise use the Smart deinterlacer.

•Deinterlace BOB: Use the BOB interlacer.

•Deinterlace WEAVE: Unsophisticated deinterlacer which simply copies the top field to the bottom field.  This reduces the effective resolution by half.

•Deinterlace Smart: Analyzes each pixel in a frame and determines if deinterlacing will result in a combing effect.  If combing is detected, it averages the surrounding pixels to create a smooth video.  If combing isn't present the original content will be preserved.

•Force Interlaced: Insures that the output video is interlaced.  Especially useful when taking progressive content from mobile devices and converting it to broadcast ready 1080i standard.
 

Deinterlacing is a complex subject, a discussion of which is beyond the scope of this section of the document.  A few points to be aware of:

•If converting interlaced material to progressive and doubling the frame rate (i.e. 1080i to 720p) BOB is the recommended deinterlacer.

•Otherwise use the "Smart" deinterlacer for best results.

•When resizing interlaced video, deinterlacing is critical to prevent combing.  Resizing can be performed on deinterlaced frames or if you prefer separately on each field of an interlaced frame.  The problem with the later, is that the vertical resolution is cut in half.  For example, when up converting 720x480 to 1920x1080 in interlaced mode, each field only has 240 lines of content resulting in a less than pleasing up convert.  With Smart deinterlacing more detail is preserved during the resizing.

Flip

Select one of:

•None - Don't flip the video

•Right-Left - Mirror right and left

•Top-Bottom - Mirror top and bottom
 

Note: Setting other than None will trigger a recode.

Max GOP length

Intelligent mode: Only used if the source file is MPEG-2 and other settings to not trigger a transcode.  As the file is being output, if any GOPs are longer than this value they are split into two or more GOPs with I-frames replacing some of the P-frames. Used primarily to reduce large SD GOP sizes in order to create DVD compatible files.

Transcoding: When transcoding to MPEG-2 video, this value determines the number of frames in each GOP.  If you're transcoding to H.264 or HEVC, the size of the GOP is set with the H.264 encoding parameters via the Advanced option button.

Encoding type

Select one of:

•Automatic - Let TVSuite choose the appropriate output codec.  If possible the source codec will be used and encoded frames will be copied un-modified to the output file.

•MPEG 1 Layer 2 - Recode the audio using MPEG1 Layer 2

•PCM/WAV - Recode the audio using PCM / WAV

•AAC - Recode the audio using AAC

•AC3 - Recode the audio using AC3

Bitrate

Select the desired encoding bit rate from the drop download list.  If encoding type is PCM/WAV this option is disabled since PCM is stored uncompressed.
 

Channels

Select one of:

•Automatic - Let TVSuite determine the optimum output channel count and if possible matching the source channel count.

•Mono (1.0) - If the source is more than 1 channel it will automatically be mixed down to mono.

•Stereo (2.0) - If the source is more than 2 channels it will automatically be mixed down to stereo.

•Surround (5.1) - Only supported if the output codec supports surround audio.  

Sample rate

Select one of:

•48 KHz - This is the standard for TV audio and is required for DVD output.

•44.1 KHz - This is the CD standard although sometimes it's used with video output.

•32 KHz - Often used with videos taken with cell phones.

Note: Not all codecs support all sampling rates.

Processing:

Select one of these options to process the audio levels during the file save:

•None - Skip any processing options, audio will be transcoded only.
 

•Normalize peak - Select the normalization via the "Peak level" text box.  Normalization is a two pass process.  In pass one, each audio stream that will be in the output file is analyzed by level to find the maximum audio level (0.0 dBFS is the highest possible maximum).  Then in the second pass, the difference between the select normalization level and maximum level is applies to all audio samples.  For example, if the highest actual source audio level peaks at  -5.0 dbFS and the selected normalization level is -3.0 dBFS, then a +2.0 db correct is applied to all samples.  One possible problem with this approach is that a single sample with a high peak level can mask lower volume levels in the rest of the program.  For more intelligent volume leveling choose, "Dynamic leveling" compression option.
 

•Dynamic leveling - Use the VideoReDo TVSuite proprietary two pass volume level algorithm.  On the first pass, volume levels for each audio frame are analyzed.  On the second pass, the volume levels are smoothed over time so that sections with low volume levels are raised in volume, louder levels are automatically reduced  Use the "Average level" text box to set the average level.
 

•Raise/lower level - Use the "Level change" text box to raise or lower the volume of all the audio by the specified number of decibels. Use +xx to raise the volume level and -xx to lower it.

The label for this text box will change depending on which Processing option is chosen.

Allow multiple audio streams

Check to process and output ALL audio streams present in the source video.  Un-check to only process and output the primary audio stream.  This option is very useful if your video's secondary audio streams are only present for a part of the program or you want to save space in the output file by only saving the audio stream you actually want.  The primary audio stream is the stream that you're currently listening to in the edit window at the time you queue the file save.

Encoding type

Select one of:

•Automatic - Let TVSuite choose the appropriate output codec.  If possible the source codec will be used and encoded frames will be copied un-modified to the output file.

•MPEG 1 Layer 2 - Recode the audio using MPEG1 Layer 2

•PCM/WAV - Recode the audio using PCM / WAV

•AAC - Recode the audio using AAC

•AC3 - Recode the audio using AC3
